The Transformation of the ‘Ugly’ QR Code
Friday, July 3rd, 2009 by Julia Hyde(This post can also be read on QReateBUZZ.)
Based on the feedback we’ve received about the look of QR Codes (apparently they’re ugly) we decided to see if we could take an ugly duckling and turn it into a beautiful swan. (Thanks to Philip Warbasse of Warbasse Design for the inspiration.)
Anyhow, here’s a couple of our new and improved QR Codes which we believe will look much better on an ad and could become a brand icon. They haven’t been checked on every phone so if you want to try it out on yours, go ahead and let us know. If you don’t have a QR Code reader you can download one at QRead.me, but be warned, this site is a work in progress.

The only problem with your designs are you aren\’t encoding the QR\’s to take into account the location of the data…and the icon.
Basically you are just cutting and pasting an image into the middle of the qr and hoping that error correction takes care of it.
Why not check out the work of DesignQR in Japan and see how it\’s really done where the QR data is eencoded \’around\’ the icon.

Hi Dean,
Thanks for the comment. We don’t expect to get it perfect first time around - the QR Codes posted are for experimentation and sharing so people involved in the industry can all work together to figure out the best way forward.
Thanks, Julia
